Six Down, Seventeen to Go in Bloated Presidential Race

Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal suspended his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination this week, but the 2016 clown car problem is far from over.

Jindal failed to make an impact in any polls, rarely breaking the 1% mark. Poor polling kept him out of the “big kids” table for the televised debates, participating only in the less-viewed undercard debates. In a race dominated by “who said the most terrible thing this week” antics, Jindal failed to horrify progressives or inspire evangelicals enough to capture viral momentum. He also trailed behind his republican rivals in campaign contributions.

As one of the youngest candidates in the race, Jindal will have more opportunities to run for the highest office in the land. The child of immigrants, born in student housing and raised to believe that anyone can become president, Jindal’s story should have been an inspiring one. But having a good story can’t make up for bad politics, and with the governor’s approval rating in Louisiana dipping to 20% amid budget problems, a presidential bid almost looks foolish in hindsight.

Maybe next time he won’t launch his campaign with an awkward surveillance video of a family meeting.
